Most visitors see Tanzania through a glass window. On the 8-Day Ngorongoro Highlands Trek, the glass is gone. This expedition is designed for those who want to trade the engine's hum for the sound of their own footsteps and the distant lowing of Maasai cattle.
You will traverse a landscape shaped by the colossal forces of the Great Rift Valley. From the lush, misty forests of the Ngorongoro crater rims to the surreal, shimmering heat of the Rift Valley floor, this trek offers a geographic diversity that is unmatched in East Africa.
Getting out in the Ngorongoro Highlands on an extended walking safari will take our more active and adventurous visitors into close contact with our proud Maasai people, herdsmen who inhabit this spectacular part of Tanzania. Our eight days ‘Ngorongoro Highlands Adventure’ tour is definitely the choice for those whose perfect day begins and ends in a campsite under African skies, In between, our daytime trek takes us first from Bulati to beautiful Empakaai, with its stunning views down over its crater lake and to the mighty volcanoes beyond. And all the time, we soak up the culture of the Maasai, our most famous tribespeople.
We start our trip in Arusha, our safari capital, to arrive at Ngorongoro with its spectacular crater, descending to enjoy a vehicle safari and with plenty of animals to observe. From there, we travel to Bulati which can boast its own crater and which is the start of our walking safari. Our hike continues to Empakaai and the following day to Acacia. From there, our adventure takes us by safari vehicle to visit the unique location of shimmering Lake Natron.
Our trip combines wildlife viewing with adventurous hiking, allowing you time to absorb the culture of the Maasai and their fascinating way of life.
Plan your ascent with our detailed route map. Whether you are looking for the most scenic trail or the best acclimatization path, this map highlights the key campsites and routes leading to the summit of Kilimanjaro.
Active. Guests who book on a trip with a rating of ‘active’ should possess a reasonable level of fitness before the trip departure. ‘Active’ trips require visitors to be able to undertake sustained physical exercise, such as walking for up to four hours or more each day, on consecutive days. Some ascent and descent during the walking can also be expected. visitors will spend some significant time in our comfortable vehicles on the rather rough roads of Tanzania.

Tanzania – tips – ngorongoro highlands trekking adventure
Tipping
Tipping is of course discretionary, but is an expected part of the way in which business is done in Tanzania. It counts as an expression of gratitude to those who – hopefully – have made your experience an unforgettable one and enables you to directly reward those people. Our passengers come from all around the world, with different cultural attitudes to tipping, but a tip is of great significance here in Tanzania and will be hugely appreciated by the recipient. We know that the act of giving of a tip can be a bit awkward and we would suggest that the best way to remove this ‘awkwardness’ is for each couple to put their tip anonymously into an envelope and for the envelopes to be presented by the couple to the staff member. As a guideline, you should consider tipping at the following levels:
1 Driver guide: $25 US per day, per couple (Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 7, Day 8)
1 Safari Chef: $15 per pay, per couple (Day 2 to Day 8)
1 Park Ranger: $15 per pay, per couple (Day 3 to Day 5)
2 Local Maasai Men per passenger: $5 per day, per maasai (Day 3 to Day 6)
For hotels/lodges/tented camps, please do not tip individual staff members, but instead use the ‘Tip Box’, which you should find at the reception of your accommodation. For guidance, you should consider tipping between $5-7 US per day, per guest, at each accommodation.
